A Year’s Worth of Gouache Sketches
Gouache has become my go-to sketching medium for outdoors. I still take out oil and pastel when the mood arises—I love them both!—but, for me, gouache fits in a lighter bag, creates less mess and is easier to work with. I feel a lot less stress painting en plein air with gouache. Now, at the end of the year, I thought I’d share some of my favorites from 2025.
By the way, for many of the newer sketches I’ve been using an ink brush pen with a fine point and loaded with grey ink to emphasize cracks in rocks and trees, plus a white gel pen if I need to add a highlight here and there. If you zoom in on some of the images below, you can see this.
The gallery works best if you view this Substack column not in email but in either the app or the web version, where you can click on the thumbnail and see a larger image. Happy New Year!
