Getting Better at Abstracting the Landscape
...and a little about using cold wax medium.
One of my goals (not necessarily a New Year’s Resolution) is to get more comfortable with abstracting the landscape. I’ll be honest: Abstraction is difficult for me. I’ve gotten pretty good over the years in simplifying the landscape for value sketches and painting, but it doesn’t take me where I’d like to go. I want to learn to lift the scene out of the physical plane—beyond structure and likeness—so that what remains is more feeling rather than a literal record.
It’s a bit like making orange juice, squeezing the fruit and straining it so that only the delicious juice remains; and the artist may choose to leave a litle pulp, if he likes, to enhance the mouth-feel.
How can I do this?
