What's an Acceptable Level of "Clean"?

Cleaning my oil palette leads to some thoughts.

What's an acceptable level of "clean" for a palette? This is the question I asked myself when I returned to my summer studio and found my OpenBox M palette thickly encrusted with dried paint. There was so much old paint that any fresh paint laid out would smear onto the lid—if I could even close it at all.
